Before I became a mother, I had no idea that breastfeeding could be a challenge. Although I was on the lucky side with a good latch from day one and supply in abundance, there have been moments in my breastfeeding journey where I have experienced a dip in supply, nipple soreness and outright engorgement pains!
I thought I would share my little survival kit here for new mums to try. It helps the late-night shopping when little one is asleep, and everything is in one place for checkout.
(Remember to speak to a lactation consultant for any latch issues and check for tongue tie if you are struggling in the early days of breastfeeding).
Silicone Breast Pump (boobs might be sore from electric pumping)
Lactation Tea (Option 1)
Lactation Tea (Option 2)
Lactation Massage Pads (Support for Clogged Ducts, Mastitis, Milk Flow & Engorgement)
Lactation Cookies (packed with oats and the goodies needed to promote milk supply)
Lanisoh Nipple Balm (this balm is amazing for chapped lips too!)
Nipple Shields (check the size before ordering)
Outside of this remember to sleep whenever you can and EAT! Even if you are snacking on oat bars, fruits and nuts. It is important to keep well hydrated and fed whilst breastfeeding, it is extremely draining on a mother’s body.
Partners, whilst Mama finds her flow, feed her, ensure she has water and try to give her some quiet time to sleep where possible.
Don’t pressure yourself either Mama, if you need to use formula, go for it. FED IS BEST and your mental health is already vulnerable in the postpartum period. It is okay to lean on the method of trial and error in the early days so if something doesn’t work, be adaptable and try something else until you find what works for you.
We had to be flexible with the birth plan because we wanted baby to arrive safely, the feeding plan is no different, baby has to eat, and Mama needs some sleep.
Good luck and don’t hesitate to book a session in if you need support.
