Creative Ways to use Excess Breast Milk at Home

Hey Mama, have you set up a milk shop in your fridge/freezer? So did I! I was overwhelmed with the bags of milk but was determined to not waste my breast milk. Especially after the feeling of euphoria of being able to do this exclusively for my son. After a 3am feed, I sat pumping and googled what to do with the excess milk that I had, by then my son refused expressed breast milk from a bottle so our stock levels were growing quickly, and storage was shrinking.

Here’s some of my favourite tips on using Mamas Milk at home:

  • Breast Milk Baths – use enough to make the water cloudy. It helps eczema, nappy rash, and cradle cap. It can also soothe sunburn and insect bites during the summer months and holidays. I loved the Shnuggle Bathtub (I had the stand whilst my back and centre of gravity recovered from pregnancy) for bath time.

  • Breastmilk Lollies – this was a life saver during the heatwave. The teething phase started during the summer months for us, and this helped to soothe little man’s gums and cooled him down. Try the Nuby Lolly Moulds they are so cute!

  • Donate your breastmilk – it can help to save the lives of poorly and premature babies whose mothers are unable to produce breast milk. I had to stay in hospital overnight with my son when he was four days old to do phototherapy for his jaundice and I saw anxious parents sitting by the incubators with their babies. I couldn’t begin to imagine how these vulnerable parents felt. If you are interested in finding out more to help new parents, check out UKAMB

  • Weaning! – I added breast milk to baby food purees. You can add breast milk to purees, porridge, baby rice and mix it in with some steamed fruits. There are some fun and creative recipes out there for you to try. I love Mango sticky rice and made a baby version for my son which he gobbled down. You don’t have to overthink it, but you can definitely have fun with weaning and breastmilk.

  • Breast milk is great natural remedy for cracked nipples. Use some of your freshly expressed breast milk on the affected area and let it airdry. I’m sure many of you also have the Lanisoh Nipple Balm on hand too.

There are many ways to use your liquid gold mamas, let us know what you did and have fun with it! XO
